#5 Missus! [MUNERA]

The spectators opinion was divided. Generally they do not like a gladiator who defeated with the first blow, but Actius had fought with honor. The publisher knows that the lanista, his good friend, has invested a lot of money in the promising career of the young Actius, so he the life of the murmillo, who is still unconscious on the arena. He will speak later with his friend about the not so discreet intervention of the referees... And for him, not even Claudius Galenus could save that poor devil.

Actius survived the wound. He continued fighting for a few years, and even got a couple more victories, but his career as a gladiator failed to take off as planned... perhaps because of the terrible wound he suffered that day, fighting Germanus. Upon his death, his remains were buried in Corduba, and on his tombstone can be read:

ACTIUS MUR(MILLO) VIC(TORIARUM) VI AN(N)O(RUM) XXI H(IC) S(ITUS) E(ST) S(IT) T(ERRA) L(EVIS) UXOR VIRO DE SUO QUOT QUISQUIS VESTRUM MORTUO OPTARIT M[O]IHI IT(-)ILI DI FACIANT SEMPER VIVO ET MORTUO

Actius, murmillo, won six times. He died at the age of twenty-one. Here lies, let the earth be light unto thee. His wife, and at her own expense, made this monument to her husband. Whatever one of you wishes for me, already deceased, may the gods do with him the same, be he alive or dead.

Y mañana...
------------
And tomorrow...
